Today we did a number of electricity experiments:
  • Showing the conversion of light energy into electrical energy using a solar cell.
  • Demonstrating the magnetic effect of electricity.
  • Demonstrating the heating effect of electricity.
  • Demonstrating the chemical effect of electricity - Electrolysis of water.
  • Investigating the use of diodes in a DC circuit
We also were given a handout for revision the Mandatory Chemistry Experiments (click here) and the opportunity to get the laminated Experiments Revision Sheets

JUNIOR CERT SCIENCE - ELECTRONICS
  • Electronics is the control of small electric currents.

Diodes
  • A diode is a component that allows electricity to flow in one direction only.

LEDs
  • LED stands for light emitting diode.
  • An LED is a diode that gives out light when electricity flows through it.
  • LEDs use less current than a bulb.
  • LEDs are used in calculators and fridges.

LDR
  • LDR stands for light dependant resistor.
  • An LDR is a resistor whose resistance depends on the amount of light.
  • The resistance of an LDR decreases as the light increases.
  • LDRs are used in street lighting and cameras.

Today we discussed possible approaches to the Coursework B experiments.
We discussed also the concepts of:
  • Control Variables - things you keep constant.
  • Independent Variable - the thing that you change (Cause).
  • Dependent Variable - the thing that changes as a result of the Independent Variable (Effect), this is the result you measure.
We then did a number of Electronics experiments.
Homework is to read Chapter 44 and answer the questions at the end of this chapter.
Electronics is about controlling small currents.
This can involve using devices such as:
  • Resistors (Fixed, variable and LDRs)
  • and Diodes (including LEDs)
